Handy History Hacks for Term 2

Welcome to Term 2!

It is set to be a whopper of a term with 11 weeks. With reports, interviews, extra students and new programmes, it is a lot!

Here are some of the things I would add to my History programme to help me through all.the.things.

☎️ use hands on resources: reach out to your school community or head to the op shop for real world resources that your students CAN touch and explore. Create a provocation table with the items to prompt ‘I wonder’ questions.

🎲play old fashioned games: think coits, marbles and elastics. There are heaps of ‘old fashioned’ games to spice up your programme.

👵 engage with the community for unique stories: no video or image can take the place of a memory shared from a family member or relative. Encourage students to ask their parents and grandparents what their life was like when they were in primary school. For example, did you have a back pack or school case? What did your pencil cases look like? What were the teachers and classrooms like? How did you talk to your friends after school? What was your first CD?

📸 display real photos: an absolute MUST for any vintage provocation table. An old black and white or sepia photograph and a frame adds a touch of magic. This could lead into a writing prompt or drama activity.

🎭 have a dress up day: a History day is just the best fun!! Think making butter using a jar of cream and marbles (or even one of our Softwhip hand mixers), learn cursive handwriting in ink, play old fashioned games and a role play performance.

If all else fails and this is just one too many things to do, on a never ending list of things to do, send us an email and we can bring the fun to you.

Play in the Past can deliver our Hands on History Collection or run our wonder-full hands on and play based incursion at your very school.

Short story: find ways to DO History!
